NID’s Off-Campus Mosaic Crash Course From Raw to Refined

Some lessons can’t be taught in a classroom.
They have to be connected, walked through, and felt!
That’s exactly what happened on March 26th, when we welcomed a group of incredibly talented Master of Design students from NID Ahmedabad’s Ceramic & Glass Design program to our Piccolo Porcelain Mosaics Manufacturing facility in Mehsana. What started as a study tour quickly turned into something far more immersive—a real-time journey through the creative and technical heartbeat of porcelain mosaic making.
The day kicked off with a glimpse into the larger world of the Italia Group, the parent force behind Piccolo and four other pioneering brands in the industry. But it was only the beginning. The students weren’t just here to observe; they came to experience. And we were more than ready to show them what goes into making mosaic tiles that don’t just decorate spaces—but define them.
From handpicking raw materials to understanding how we turn those into porcelain mosaic floor tiles, mosaic wall tiles, and even pool tiles, the students walked through the entire cycle. And at every step, they didn’t just nod along—they asked, they listened, and they connected dots between the design table and the factory floor.
They explored how mosaic flooring tiles are tested for strength, how we maintain consistency in design at scale, and why every tile at Piccolo is shaped not just by machinery, but by mindset. Our factory experts shared the ‘why’ behind the ‘how’—explaining that true craftsmanship is about never letting go of quality, even when you're producing thousands of square feet.
By the end of the visit, something had shifted. The students didn’t just leave with technical knowledge—they left with a deeper respect for what goes into crafting surfaces that carry emotion, precision, and purpose.
At Piccolo, we believe that every tile is a small piece of a much bigger story. And on that day, we were proud to let the next generation of designers be part of it—even just for a little while. Because when creativity meets process, and curiosity assembles craft, something beautiful happens. And that’s exactly what we witnessed—together.
